 bout the Book
In 1937, there were 46 grocery stores in Lawrence, Kansas--a community of about 14,000--allowing one store for every neighborhood, it would seem. Chicken pot pie and vegetable soup, made from scratch, of course, were common fare both in the home and in the local restaurants, tea rooms, and roadside eateries. In 1934, local bakeries offered cinnamon rolls for 15 cents a dozen; and fried chicken dinners, with all the trimmings, could be had at local lunch counters for 25 cents. With an economic depression and a world war straining the household larders, money became scarce, and food a precious commodity. It was a time when making adjustments was crucial--if not patriotic. Scattered among the hundreds of prize-winning recipes contained in The Market Basket, you'll find these and other stories:
Ice Box Bandits Make Off with a Turkey, A Chicken, and Half a Pig
Lone Star Lake Opens
Osage Tribesman to Conduct Buffalo Barbeque
Chief of Police Cracks Down on Runaway Chickens
Boys Hauled in for Hurling Potatoes at Motorists
Tomatoes Needed for the Army
Is it a watermelon? No, it's a cucumber! |

"Jane Garrett lifts the lid on Lawrence's culinary past to reveal a nostalgic kettle of home cooked family favorite recipes. This book is a tribute to Lawrence's culinary heritage. The Market Basket will appeal to cooks hungry for "scratch" recipes and provides an opportunity to try the recipes your mother never taught you."
— Jayni Carey, co-author, The Kansas Cookbook: Recipes from the Heartland, and host of Jayni's Kitchen, a weekly television cooking show
"Jane Garrett's delightful journey into the kitchens of Lawrence homemakers is truly a timeless treat. Food, family and friends are the stuff of our culture no matter the era, and Jane has accurately captured the ins and outs of daily life as seen through a weekly recipe competition. More fun is found in the frequent use of print ads from the Lawrence Journal-World. The recipes are written as though being told to you across the kitchen table."
